We all have goals. As business owners it is in our nature to strive for something, and goals are something that we are driven to achieve. If we didn’t have that kind of internal motivation, then owning a business would really be a terrible idea.
It’s not the act of setting goals that keeps us going though.
In fact for many of us, setting goals is just a motion we go through. It makes us feel good and motivates us for a time.
The truth is that, and I’m sure you can relate to this, soon after you set a goal you forget about it. It gets lost in the big scheme of everything else you’re focusing on and even if you don’t completely forget the goal, it still takes the back seat.
If done right, your goals can become the driving force on your business that you want them to be. (And you can actually achieve them).
Here are a few tricks.
1. Break down your goals into actionable steps.
Having a goal is wonderful, but unless you know what you need to do to achieve it, it will get buried under your everlasting to do list.
Plus, when you have actionable steps it makes it easier to schedule those steps into your day to day activities so your goals can come to fruition.
2. Keep your goals in front of you at all times.
Make sure you don’t let your goals fly into the ether by keeping them in front of you.
There are many systems to doing this whether it be a software program, post it notes, or as one of my mastermind buddies likes to do is writing them on a giant piece of poster paper and hanging them above her desk.
The other benefit of keeping them in front of you is that when you have down time or you’re putting together your to do list for the week you can slide in your goal action steps. When you keep them top of mind, you’re much more likely to make them happen.
3. Measure your progress.
Part of keeping your goals in front of you and top of mind is measuring your progress. This will help you in a couple of ways. For one, by tracking your progress you’ll know if you need to adjust what you’re doing in order to achieve them.
The second benefit is that when you’re tracking your goals and see yourself making progress it keeps you motivated to keep going!
The bottom line is that setting goals doesn’t work if you just set them and forget them. There is no better feeling than achieving your goals however, and hopefully these 3 steps will help you do that.
