Building your email list of prospects is obviously a top priority for solopreneurs and there are literally hundreds of ways to do it.
The problem is that because there are hundreds of ways to do it, creating and executing your list building strategy can be unnecessarily overwhelming.
To help with this I’m going to break the art of list building down into just two steps.
1. Create an offer.
2. Market it.
Sounds easy right? Well it is, if you don’t over think things. (but that’s not so easy is it?)
Let’s take a look at…
Step 1: Creating Your Offer
There are two kinds of offers you can make in order to build your list. The static offer, and the expiring offer.
The most common static offer is the freebie you offer on your website to incentivize prospects to sign up for your newsletter. This type of offer is pretty much one and done on your part. You create it and it works for you over and over again.
It’s also the slower of the two approaches but has lasting results over the long term because it’s always there working for you. Here’s a helpful article about how to create a kick-butt static offer.
The expiring offer has a quicker flash in the pan effect because it well… expires.
Expiring offers usually take the form of virtual events like teleseminars, telesummits, webinars, etc.
They solve an immediate need, they have a deadline, and because they are happening here and now they are much easier to enlist others to promote.
Expiring offers could also take the shape of specials, or passive products that are only being offered for a short time.
Ideally you’ll be using a combination of offers in your overall list building strategy. If you’re just starting out though the first step is always to create your static opt in offer for your website and go from there.
So let’s talk about …
Step 2: Marketing Your Offer
No matter how sweet your offer is, if no one sees it they can’t sign up! This is where marketing comes in.
And again, there is a list a hundred miles long on the different ways to market yourself. So I’m not going to go into a ton of detail on how to market and instead I’m going to give you a simple way to think about marketing to get you started.
Sometimes we overthink things when it comes to marketing our businesses, but when you break it down you market stuff all the time in your personal life. Because all marketing is, is creating awareness.
So let’s look at your regular ol’ life. If you are hosting a party how would you get people to go to it? You’d invite them personally, you’d have your friends invite their friends, you’d post on Facebook and the list goes on. Well promoting an event like a teleseminar works much the same way.
And on the other hand if you read an interesting article on how to train your dog to stop chewing on your shoes and you thought it would be helpful to others, what would you do? You’d post it on social media for your friends, you’d send it to a few people directly, you might write an article about it and post it to your blog and again the list goes on and on.
So instead of thinking about marketing your business offer as unfamiliar territory, promote it the same way you would anything else in your life. The only difference is who you’re promoting to.
With these two steps you can’t go wrong, and of course you can definitely get more complex with these but I hope that by breaking them down to their bare bones it helps you see how simple building your list can be.
